Structural Steel Brings a New Look to Lakewood ICC

August brought an exciting milestone to the Lakewood ICC project as structural steel officially began going up. With FCC mobilizing to the site, the project is entering a highly visible phase of construction that will quickly transform the look of the new addition.

In preparation for steel erection, crews have completed demolition of the existing façade where the new addition will connect to the current building. The new masonry stair and elevator towers are also complete, providing the vertical structures needed to support the next phase of work. Over the coming weeks, FCC will install columns, beams, and decking along the west side of the building, creating the structural framework and allowing the new addition to really begin taking shape.

Completing the steel structure will also open the door for several additional trade partners to begin their work. Once the framework is in place, attention will shift to enclosing the building. Exterior framing, brick, curtain wall, and metal panels will begin creating the new façade, giving us our first real glimpse of what the finished addition will look like. With more trades joining the effort, activity around the site will continue to increase significantly.

While the main addition is rising on the west side, work is also progressing on several improvements on the east side of the property. The existing generator is being relocated to make way for excavation and construction of the new electrical room and generator enclosure. These additions will support the infrastructure needs of the expanded facility and are another important piece of the overall project.

The new parking lot is also progressing smoothly, with crews installing curbs and the base course this week. The lot is expected to be turned over next month and will add approximately 40 new parking spaces. In addition to providing more capacity for the facility, the new spaces should help alleviate some of the congestion currently experienced in the main parking lot.

After months of work focused largely at or below ground level, it's exciting to see the Lakewood ICC addition beginning to rise. With structural steel underway, exterior work close behind, and improvements continuing across the site, the next several weeks should bring some of the most noticeable changes we've seen on the project so far. We look forward to sharing the progress as the new addition continues to take shape.
